Train services to and from continental Europe - on both Eurostar and Le Shuttle - were suspended for much of the day after a power supply failure due to a technical fault and a failed Le Shuttle blocking all routes.

The disruption upended New Year's plans for thousands of passengers in London, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam during ⁠one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

Repairs are under way to try to fix the issue.

Eurostar said it was resuming some of its services gradually around 3pm on Tuesday, but passengers were urged to stay away.

As of the early hours of Friday, the first Eurostar trains to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam around 6am show as cancelled, while Le Shuttle records delays of at least an hour to people's booked departure times.

Eurostar told passengers: "As the overhead power supply issues in the Channel Tunnel still remain, only one line is available to run trains on.

"This means there will continue to be delays and longer journey times than usual this evening.

"Therefore, we continue to advise our customers to rebook their journey for another day if possible, with free exchanges available.

"We also advise customers not to come to our stations if their trains have already been cancelled."

It added: "Although outside of our control, we apologise for the disruption today and will continue to keep customers updated with the latest information and support them with rescheduling their bookings."

Getlink, which operates the tunnel infrastructure, said repairs to the power supply were under way and that traffic services were slowly being restored in both directions.

"Our teams are working to restore the situation as quickly as possible. Waiting times will be adjusted throughout the day," the company added.

"Eurotunnel apologises for the inconvenience and thanks its customers for their patience and understanding."

The Channel Tunnel accommodates Eurostar services as well as LeShuttle vehicle-carrying trains between the UK and France.

Among those affected was cancer patient Ethlyn Buckmire, who had spent £3,500 on her son's dream 10th birthday trip to Disneyland, only for their train to be turned away at the Channel Tunnel.

Ms Buckmire told Sky News she did not take out travel insurance because her cancer diagnosis made the premiums too expensive.

"We are going to try and go home and salvage the rest of the holiday season and try and celebrate his birthday some other way," she said, "but to be honest, I don't have the energy, I really don't. We were so looking forward to that trip."

Another family, from Nigeria, faced being "stranded" in London without a hotel after their Paris-bound train was also turned back.

Eurostar rules

Under Eurostar's customer charter, travellers have a choice of three options in the event of cancellations or delays of an hour or more.

The options are:

Exchange your booking to travel in the same class at a different time or date;

E-voucher: Cancel your booking and claim a voucher, to be redeemed within 12 months from eurostar.com;

Refund: Cancel your booking and claim a refund for the value of your ticket (but not for any booking or exchange fees).

Eurostar says passengers have three months to decide which option to take. Refunds will be processed within 28 days.

If a customer travels on the next available service the same day, they are also entitled to claim delay compensation.

Stuck overnight?

If you cannot continue your journey on the day of travel, Eurostar says it "may" be able to cover expenses incurred as a direct result of the delayed or cancelled train. This includes overnight accommodation; food; transport between the station and your accommodation; and the cost of calling anyone who was waiting for you at your destination.

To claim, you'll need to fill in a form on Eurostar's website, so make sure you have your tickets, receipts and bank details to hand.

LeShuttle rules

Drivers using this service are entitled to a full refund in the event of cancellation.

The rules for delays are less generous, with customers offered a voucher if they've waited for an hour or more.

This is where travel insurance comes in handy, often facilitating claims against advanced bookings like hotels and activities - so check if you're covered.

What does the government say?

Shadow transport secretary Richard Holden has called on the government to ensure passengers are "properly compensated" for the "chaos".

Department for Transport guidance stipulates that when trains are delayed for more than an hour, passengers should be offered:

Meals and refreshments "in reasonable relation to the waiting time" if these are available on the train or station or can be reasonably supplied;

Accommodation and transport when an overnight stay is necessary.

What does "reasonable" mean?

When disruption causes delays to a "very large number of passengers", it is not considered reasonable to expect an operator to distribute refreshments, according to the DfT.

Operators should put in place alternatives, such as a voucher system, it says.

LNER free travel offer

Anyone who had to abandon their journey to London King's Cross on an LNER train due to the disruption on Tuesday is allowed to travel back home for free using the same ticket, the East Coast Main Line operator said.

Customers choosing to defer their Eurostar travel to a different day may also use their existing LNER ticket to travel.

Joshua, 36, a former two-time world heavyweight champion, suffered minor injuries as he travelled in the back of a black Lexus that hit a truck in Makun, ⁠Ogun State, about 30 miles from the country's biggest city, Lagos.

Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both 36, who were also passengers in the vehicle, died in the accident on the busy highway on Monday.

A man who was nearby when the crash happened said he heard a loud "boom" and thought a truck's tyre had burst.

Speaking to Sky News, Ajala Yusuf Oluwaseyi said he saw a car drive under a truck that was parked on the highway.

He said after the crash Joshua was "shocked with the deadliness of the incident" and added: "He was shocked, he couldn't talk."

Joshua was on holiday in Africa after his win over US YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami just over a week ago.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident and authorities said Joshua was taken to hospital for treatment along with another injured person.

Officials said he is still in a "stable" condition and "receiving appropriate medical attention".

Joshua's spokesperson said in a statement Mr Ghami and Mr Ayodele "were close friends and integral members of Anthony's team".

One of Mr Ayodele's best friends, Mustafa Briggs, said his loved ones are "shocked" by his death, as he described him as "one of the most pure-hearted" people.

"This is one of the craziest, toughest days of my life," he told Sky News, saying his fondest memory was their shared trip to Mecca, while they also visited Nigeria together this time last year.

"Everybody who knew him loved him," he said. "He lived his life the best way he knew. He was someone who always put his faith first, he was somebody who put prayer as a priority and maintaining a good relationship with everybody he knew.

"He didn't have a bad intention towards anybody. Everybody will always remember him smiling, laughing, being cheerful, and being an inspirational person."

Mr Ayodele also said Mr Ghami, who he met through his friend, seemed like an "amazing person".

How did the crash happen?

The crash happened on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, at about midday local time (11am UK time), according to the Nigerian federal road safety corps (FRSC).

The FRSC said preliminary findings indicated the Lexus was "suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed limit" and "lost control" while overtaking before crashing into the truck, which was parked by the side of the road.

"The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways," the corps said on X.

Pictures released by the FRSC show the badly damaged Lexus that Joshua was travelling in and the red Sinotruck that it collided with.

Footage posted on social media shows the British ex-world heavyweight champion apparently wincing in pain as he is helped out of the wreckage by a crowd.

Other clips show him in an emergency vehicle, wearing only a pair of shorts, as he is driven away from the scene.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said on X he had "spoken with AJ to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates".

"I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and prayed with him. AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care," he said.

Joshua's long-time rival Tyson Fury said in a post on Instagram: "This is so sad may god give them a good bed in heaven."

Support from the boxing world

Former heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko, who retired from boxing after he was knocked out by Joshua at Wembley Stadium in 2017, said he was "deeply saddened" by the crash.

"Having had the pleasure of engaging in an unforgettable battle with AJ, I've always regarded him as a true class act who commands my utmost respect," he posted on X.

"My heart goes out to him, and I wish him and his loved ones all the best during this difficult time."

Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan also wished Joshua a "speedy recovery" and said he was "extremely saddened" to hear about the loss of his "two close boys".

"May God give their families strength, and may Allah grant them the highest rank in Jannah," he said on the social media site.

Joshua, who is the son of British-Nigerian parents, attended a boarding school in Ikenne, around 50 miles from where the crash happened, before returning to ‌Britain at the age of 12.

A post on the JFK Library Foundation's Instagram account said Ms Schlossberg, the daughter of former US ambassador Caroline Kennedy, died on Tuesday.

"Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning," it read. "She will always be in our hearts."

The post was signed off as being from Ms Schlossberg's husband, George, and their two children, Edwin and Josephine, as well as her parents and siblings.

The 35-year-old's father is designer and artist Edwin Schlossberg. She had one brother, Jack, and a sister, Rose, who donated stem cells for her cancer treatment.

Ms Schlossberg, an environmental journalist, attacked her relative Robert F Kennedy Jr as she revealed her cancer diagnosis on the anniversary of JFK's assassination in November.

She said measures backed by RFK Jr, a long-time vaccine critic, could hurt cancer patients.

Ms Schlossberg wrote in an essay for The New Yorker: "As I spent more and more of my life under the care of doctors, nurses, and researchers striving to improve the lives of others, I watched as Bobby cut nearly a half billion dollars for research into mRNA vaccines, technology that could be used against certain cancers."

After the birth of her second child, a doctor noticed her high white blood cell count, which turned out to be acute myeloid leukaemia with a rare mutation.

Ms Schlossberg wrote she underwent rounds of chemotherapy, two stem cell transplants and participated in clinical trials. She also spoke of fearing her young children would not remember her.

The collision involved a train coming from the famed archaeological site and a train headed there in the early afternoon near Qoriwayrachina, also an archaeological site, according to the company operating the railway.

The person who was killed was a railway worker, Jhonathan Castillo Gonzalez, a captain with the police department in the nearby city of Cuzco, said.

He said that train services along the line connecting Machu Picchu with Cuzco were suspended after the accident.

Authorities have not shared details regarding the cause of the crash.

Footage shared by local media showed train carriages with broken windows and dented sides, which were stuck on tracks set between a forest and a rock wall.

Around 1.5 million people flock to Machu Picchu every year, most of whom arrive by train.

The archaeological site was built by the Incas in the 15th century and served as a sanctuary for the Inca emperors.

Machu Picchu is known for its dry-stone brick walls and its three primary structures, including the Temple of the Sun.
